Cookeville Update

- Posted May 1st, 2024 at 7:36pm
I have been wondering lately about the status of W35DZ-D channel 35 in the Algood/Cookeville area. A while back they said they were to become the ATSC 3.0 (NextgenTV) station for WCTE, but so far, they have only been simulcasting what is on WCTE in 1.0. I had posted about where they had a problem with their transmitter, and they had to lower the power on it until they received a newer one. So, today, I emailed someone associated with the matter, and I got a reply back. I want to thank them for replying back to me, and also, thank the Station Manager of WCTE for also reaching out to me. Now, here is the reply.

"The transmitter and new ATSC 3.0 equipment are all installed. We are waiting for completion of a transmitter certification process that the FCC requires before we can initiate operations for it. We don’t anticipate any material delays – at this point it’s all about the paperwork.

We anticipate that the process will be completed by the end of May. We need to coordinate a specific date for initiating the new service with WCTE. So, it will be very early in June, but we don’t have a specific start date yet.

Once we start operating with the new equipment, the coverage area of W35DZ-D will be significantly increased, and the station will transmit in ATSC 3.0. "

So, there you have it. I will give another update once I hear (or see) something happen. Until more news breaks, that's all for now.

I'll be able to check if W35DZ-D is ATSC 3.0 in the future. Not too sure if my tuner will pick up a signal quality but I'll see something from it when it eventually does go online.

I get W35DZ loud and clear, once I abandoned trying to get Huntsville. Then rotated my 20' high outdoor antenna toward Cookeville. This was mainly because my other tuner/antenna for W14EE wasn't keeping a solid lock. It was my ONLY OTA path for that WSMV at night. So it will be interesting to see what 3.0 plans are in store for 35DZ. Great work NashDigie.

WCTE is currently just an RF channel with no watchable channels. All channels are gone from it. The storm knocked out power to the station. EDIT: WCTE is back to normal.
